Amman, Nov. 10 (Petra) – Jordan Armed Forces- Arab Army (JAF), in cooperation with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Jordan, on Monday held a "Regional Roundtable of Military Experts on Integrating International Humanitarian Law into Military Decision-Making".
The event, which was attended by Assistant for Personnel and Administration and ICRC’s Head of Delegation in Jordan, Yann Fridez, aimed to enhance awareness of the principles of international humanitarian law (IHL) and promote their integration into military decision-making.
The three-day workshop at the InterContinental Hotel in Amman brought together 25 representatives from Arab and other world countries, ICRC staff members, and accredited military and defense attachés in the Kingdom.
In opening remarks, Fridez said the JAF believes that humanitarian action is an integral part of military operations, reflecting moral values that safeguard human dignity and humanity even amid conflict.
He said the workshop embodies the deep partnership between Jordan and the ICRC and their shared belief in the importance of humanitarian and legal cooperation in supporting international peace and security.
For his part, Friede said the meeting focuses on a key commitment to integrating IHL into military decision-making amid legal and humanitarian challenges that arise during the planning and execution of military operations, ensuring that decisions comply with international humanitarian law (IHL).
The workshop serves as a platform for dialogue and exchange among military and legal experts and humanitarian representatives to review the experiences of JAF and participating militaries in applying IHL within operational environments.
Jordan, in cooperation with the ICRC and five other countries, launched the Global Initiative on Renewing the Political Commitment to International Humanitarian Law (GIIHL), further strengthening the Kingdom’s role as a regional center for dialogue and defense cooperation to advance legal and operational frameworks protecting civilian infrastructure and medical facilities during armed conflicts.
